A 2013 WRX STi with 108k kilometres for $26.8k CAD, or a new 2018 Elantra GT Sport for roughly the same price? One has a warranty and a lower finance rate, one is a rally car with all wheel drive. It’s getting to the point where I’m going to know where I’m moving to, so it looks like the car purchase is going to be happening within three months.
What's been going on in this neck of the woods?

Hmm, tough choice. Both nice cars.

Exactly. But the warranty for a daily driver sounds a lot more appealing. But on the other hand, dream car.

None of the above? I mean I’d definitely rather drive the Subie but I’m not sure I’d rather own it. But I’m pretty meh about every Hyundai I’ve ever driven . Then again I’m pretty meh about most cars I could actually afford right now. Whats the probability of fun driving in the STi?

Save money now for the dream later. The Elantra GT is nice, I've driven one. You'll still be #jalop

Probability of fun (considering I live in a place where it snows): high
Probability of financial ruin: also high
I like Hyundais. My girlfriend has a 2014 Elantra GT that has been solid, so I'm good with the brand.

I currently drive one since my girlfriend has one. I agree, it’s nice.
And damn finance people telling me to be smart with money.

What’s t he financial ruin part? As far as I know the STI is a reliable car as long as you don’t dump the clutch on standing starts.

More gas, more insurance, head gaskets are a $1k job at least if they start to go, and speeding tickets.

I’ve never driven either, but I liked the Elantra GT Sport that I sat in and poked around a bit. They’re supposed to be a good drive.
I do have a Subaru on I believe the same platform, with the non-turbo version of the same engine. Mine is already bad on gas, I can only imagine how bad an STI must be. At least it’s fast in exchange, mine is slow and inefficient. The manual should help too, the auto in the Legacy and the lack of turbo makes it feel like about 100hp at the wheels.
I feel the head gasket anxiety. I’m not looking forward to whenever mine need done.

Love the Subie, but if it’s your DD we’re talking about there comes a time when logic has to take a bit of a hold....the Elantra GT is a pretty nice car, maybe not performance oriented or fast, but it would make a nice DD for sure....I really love the look of the current gen Elantra GTs!
My 2009 Hyundai Accent may be a base model with no features, but it’s been pretty much dead reliable so I’m perfectly happy with the brand...Kia as well considering their products are all on the same platforms
,
engines, etc.

Fun to drive or maintenance free, pick one.
An STi with 108k on it sounds like a new head gasket soon to me. On the Elantra, I really can’t say enough about how little care they require. I just passed one down the family line to my sister- 94k miles, 8 years, all of them hard, and the only thing that ever had to be replaced that wasn’t a wear item in its interval was the gas cap. Total snooze to drive though, unless you just beat on it in the snow. Not sure about the new ones, but mine had a manual handbrake, so you could lock the rears in turns. Did I mention that it was beat on for eight years?

There’s a decision to be made here? Get the STi.

On the one had you have a car that will depreciate little but you’ll pay too much for and on the other is a car that will likely be a decent value but won’t be worth much in 5 years. Tough call!

Get the Hyundai. You’ll never be mad at yourself for having safe and reliable transportation.
After your next raise or bonus, get a cheap project car. It may not be an STI (IME you don’t want
other people’s STIs), but fun AWD cars are readily available, and old Volvos and regular Subarus can be fun to tinker with. One of my acquaintances got am AWD Lincoln MKZ that he’s turning into a sleeper performance car in the spirit
of a Mazdaspeed6 and Volvo S60R.

Counterpoint: these STI hatchbacks are holding their value incredibly well, so depreciation on the new car would cost more than a few head gaskets.
Full disclosure: I’m an STI (sedan) owner.

What you want is a 2001 GMC Jimmy 4-door 4x4, in white.

I would probably go for a regular WRX a few years newer and then get a second set of winter wheels and tires.
